Faith That Moves Mountains

snow capped mountains with valley and forest

Matthew 17:20 (NKJV) – “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

What does it really mean to have faith that moves mountains?

We often imagine mountain-moving faith as bold, loud, unshakable confidence—but in reality, Jesus said all it takes is faith the size of a mustard seed. That means mountain-moving faith is not about size, but about source. It’s not the strength of your faith—it’s the strength of your God.

But truthfully, there are moments when faith becomes hard.
When prayers seem unanswered…
When doors remain closed…
When life doesn’t unfold the way you expected…
Your heart begins to feel disappointment, and your faith takes a hit.

Suddenly, the mountain looks bigger.
God looks silent.
And your confidence wavers.

The Bible warns us about this:

  • “Whatever is not of faith is sin” (Romans 14:23)
  • “Let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea…unstable in all his ways.”(James 1:6–8)

God does not take pleasure in wavering minds because wavering keeps us stuck—unable to move forward, unable to receive, unable to walk in the fullness of what He promised.

So the real question becomes:

How do we build faith—even when we see no evidence yet?

How do we move mountains with the faith we already have?

1. Faith Grows by Hearing the Word

You cannot have strong faith with a weak Word life.

Romans 10:17 – “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”

Every time you read, meditate, or speak the Word, your faith grows roots.

2. Faith Speaks What It Believes

Faith is not silent. Mountain-moving faith speaks to the mountain.

Jesus didn’t say pray about the mountain.
He said speak to it.

Your words carry spiritual authority:

  • “You will decree a thing, and it will be established for you.” (Job 22:28)

Even when you don’t see change yet—keep declaring God’s truth.

3. Faith Stands on God’s Character, Not Circumstances

Faith is not built on what you see—it’s built on who He is.

God is still faithful.
God is still good.
God is still working.
God is still in control.

Mountains are temporary—God is eternal.

4. Faith Is Strengthened Through Tests

Your mountain is not a punishment; it’s a classroom.

1 Peter 1:7 – Your faith is tested so it may come out pure as gold.

A faith that has never been tested cannot be trusted.

5. Start With the Faith You Have

You don’t need more faith—you need to use what you already have.

A mustard seed becomes a tree only when planted.
Your faith grows when activated.

God moves when you move in faith.

Your mountain may look immovable.
Your situation may look impossible.
But God specializes in the impossible.

Don’t give up. Don’t quit. Don’t fold.

Keep believing beyond what you see—because the God you serve is able to move mountains, shift atmospheres, and bring breakthrough in ways that will leave you in awe.

Your mountain will move—not by sight, not by feeling, but by faith.
