Women have played an important role in the history of Christianity. Throughout the Bible, we see examples of women who walked with God, demonstrating faith, courage, and obedience to Him. Let us explore some of these inspiring women and the verses that highlight their faith.
- Sarah Sarah was the wife of Abraham and the mother of Isaac. Despite being barren for many years, she trusted God’s promise that she would have a son. In Hebrews 11:11, it says, “By faith, even Sarah herself received the ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.”
- Ruth Ruth was a Moabite woman who married into a Hebrew family. When her husband died, she chose to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, and move to Israel. There, she worked hard to provide for Naomi and eventually married Boaz, a wealthy landowner. In Ruth 1:16-17, she famously said, “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried.”
- Esther Esther was a Jewish woman who became queen of Persia. When the king’s advisor, Haman, plotted to kill all the Jews in the kingdom, Esther risked her life to plead with the king on behalf of her people. In Esther 4:14, her cousin Mordecai encouraged her, saying, “And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
- Mary Mary was a young Jewish woman who was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus. Despite the risk of scandal and social ostracism, she humbly submitted to God’s plan for her life. In Luke 1:38, she said, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”
- Lydia Lydia was a wealthy businesswoman who became a Christian after hearing the apostle Paul preach. She welcomed Paul and his companions into her home and provided for them. In Acts 16:14, it says, “The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.”
- Mary Magdalene Mary Magdalene was one of Jesus’ most devoted followers. She was present at his crucifixion and was the first person to see him after his resurrection. In John 20:16, Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
- Priscilla Priscilla was a Christian woman who, along with her husband, Aquila, helped to establish churches throughout the Mediterranean. She is mentioned several times in the New Testament as a leader in the early Christian movement. In Acts 18:26, she and Aquila corrected Apollos, a prominent preacher who had incomplete knowledge of the gospel.
These are just a few examples of the many women who walked with God in the Bible. Their faith, courage, and obedience continue to inspire us today. May we follow in their footsteps and trust in God’s plan for our lives.
