The Fruits of the Spirit: A Measure of Our Relationship with God

As children of God, we are called to reflect His character and nature in our lives. One of the ways that we can see the evidence of our relationship with God is through the fruits of the Spirit, which are described in Galatians 5:22-23 as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

In John 15:8, Jesus says, “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” This verse reminds us that bearing fruit, specifically the fruits of the Spirit, is a measure of our relationship with God and our level of discipleship.

In Matthew 7:16-20, Jesus teaches, “You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” This verse reminds us that the fruits of the Spirit are a tangible expression of our relationship with God, and that a lack of fruit is an indicator of a lack of relationship.

In Romans 8:5, it says, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” This verse reminds us that the fruits of the Spirit are the result of our lives being in alignment with the desires of the Spirit, and that when our minds are set on the desires of the flesh, we will not bear the fruit of the Spirit.

In Colossians 1:10, it says, “So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” This verse reminds us that the fruits of the Spirit are a reflection of our ability to please God and live a life worthy of Him, and that our growth in the knowledge of God will result in an increase in fruitfulness.

The fruits of the Spirit are a measure of our relationship with God, a tangible expression of our discipleship, and an indicator of our alignment with the desires of the Spirit. Let us seek to live in accordance with the Spirit, so that we may bear much fruit, please God in every way, and be known as His children.
